The Affiliate Datafeed Unique Content Myth

Some marketers would have you believe that datafeeds are the unique content holy grail. Let’s use some logic for a moment — if you, as an affiliate, have access to the datafeed, then all the other affiliates will have access to the same datafeed. Where’s the truly unique content there?

Using the same datafeed files as other affiliates doesn’t mean you can’t have a unique affiliate website, however; there are a couple ways. It does take a little more effort on your part (not much, about 30 extra minutes preparing the datafeed depending on size), but the results may be surprising.

Rewrite Product Descriptions

Before you run screaming to the hills at the thought of rewriting all those product descriptions, consider for a moment the actual length of product descriptions. More often than not, the product descriptions are one or two short sentences each.

Rewriting the product descriptions may even help to increase the click through and conversion rates for the individual products. Some merchants don’t necessarily have the time to put into crafting compelling product descriptions for their datafeeds, so you can take up the slack in that respect.

Product Description Rewriting Tips

Here are a few tips for rewriting product descriptions:

  • Write for the reader first, search engine second. It’s all right to include some keywords in the product description, but not so much it makes no sense to the person actually making the purchase.
  • Use plain English. (Or plain language.) If the product description includes words that are not common, look up the meaning and substitute with an easier to understand word. Some product descriptions make absolutely no sense to the layman and by rewriting the description, you can serve as a translator.
  • Brevity over fluff. In an effort to bulk up their descriptions, some merchants will add filler. Remove the filler/repetition when doing a rewrite; it makes it easier for the visitor to read and act upon.

Let’s look at example using the tips above:

Original Description: Pinnacle Alpha Dopa contains natural secretagogues which may support your bodys ability to stimulate the natural release of growth hormone.

Rewritten Description: Pinnacle Alpha Dopa contains natural stimulants which may support your body’s ability to release growth hormone.

The original description contained uncommon words and an awkward sentence structure. (Do you know what a secretagogue is offhand?) The end result was a shorter description that tells the reader exactly what the product is and can do for her. The rewrite only took a few minutes, but may result in a higher click through rate and it sets itself apart from the other affiliates using the same datafeed.
